Wake Tech, a two-year accredited institution of higher education and technical training school, is located approximately five miles south of Raleigh.  WTCC is part of the North Carolina Community College System, a state-supported body of fifty-nine campuses throughout the State of North Carolina.  Programs offered at the college are Arts and Sciences, Business Education, Computer & Information Technology, Engineering Technology, Health Education, Vocational Education, and University Transfer. Wake Tech’s continuing education programs include short-term, non-credit classes for job skills development, special interests or occupational licensing. The college also offers English as a Second Language, adult high school, GED and basic skills programs.

 

For more than four decades, Wake Technical Community College has benefited the economy of Wake County.  The college creates jobs, provides post-secondary educational opportunities for the population, trains skilled technical professionals for local industry and enhances local business and industry enterprise. 

 

Nash Community College

Nash Community College, a unit of the North Carolina Community College System, was founded in 1967 and is a public two-year post secondary educational institution with an open door admission policy. Its mission is to provide adults in the Nash County service area with quality and convenient learning opportunities consistent with identified student and community needs. Over 11,000 citizens participated in programs at Nash Community College during the 2003-2004 school year.

 

The main campus of Nash Community College is located on 86 acres midway between Nashville and Rocky Mount, North Carolina, less than a mile off the major interchange of U.S. Highway 64 Bypass and US Interstate 95. While the primary service area is Nash County, the convenient location attracts students from the surrounding counties of Franklin, Wake, Wilson, and Halifax. Five modern buildings including the 48,000 square foot Business and Industry Center and a four-star rated Child Development Center comprise the campus physical plant. A new two-story 46,000 square foot Science and Technology Center is under construction that will encompass specialized classrooms and state-of-the-art labs to support instruction in biology, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, physics, and networking technology. The projected completion of the Science and Technology Center is fall 2005.

 

As a comprehensive community college, sixty-seven academic programs are offered, many which lead to a degree, diploma, or certificate. Included are two-year technical and college transfer programs, which give the students the knowledge and expertise, required for challenging careers or successful transfer to four-year colleges or universities.

 

Vocational, occupational, business, and industry related programs are offered which prepare students for jobs and provide a skilled workforce for the area. Additionally, the College offers Adult Basic Education, GED, and adult high school to meet the diverse needs of the citizenry in Nash County and surrounding area.

 

The College employs 409 full and part-time faculty and staff to provide administrative and instructional services to students. The operating budget for 2004-2005 totals $17,015.846.

 

Eastern North Carolina Plastics Technology Center

 

 

The Town of Zebulon is home to the Eastern North Carolina Plastics Technology Center.

 

Six community colleges in close proximity to Raleigh, NC, have been given approval by the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) to award associate degrees in applied science in Manufacturing Technology with a Plastics concentration. The community colleges in this consortium are Edgecombe, Johnston, Nash, Wake Tech, Wayne, and Wilson Tech.

 

Students will complete their first-year courses at their home community college and complete the second-year courses at the ENCPTC located in Zebulon, NC.  At the consortium's technology center, students will be trained in the latest techniques and equipment used in the plastics industry.

 

Vance-Granville Technical College

Vance-Granville Community College, located north of Zeulon in Henderson, NC, was chartered in 1969 as Vance County Technical Institute by the North Carolina General Assembly.

 

The main campus, picturesque with a lake and attractive landscaping, boasts eight permanent buildings that include a student services complex, civic center and daycare unit. Along with administrative and faculty offices, auditorium, student lounge and learning resources center, these facilities provide 36 classrooms, 10 shops and 20 labs in which students may train in 35-plus curriculum programs, as well as extension, economic development, continuing education, and small business classes. Its total value is approximately $24.3 million.

 

Vance-Granville also maintains three satellite campuses: South Campus, located between Butner and Creedmoor in Granville County; Warren County Campus, which operates in downtown Warrenton; and Franklin County Campus, situated on Highway 56 outside Louisburg.

 

Johnston Community College

Johnston Community College is located southeast of Zebulon in Smithfield in Johnston County.  The college has an enrollment of over 5,800 students and serves more than 9,000 continuing education students.  The school offers more than 55 programs of study as well as continuing education offerings.

 

The Smithfield campus is on a beautiful wooded 100-acre site near the intersection of US Highway 70 Business and Interstate 95, east of Smithfield, North Carolina. Bordering both sides of College Road, the campus has 13 buildings, two scenic ponds with fountains, athletic fields, and is also home to the endangered Red-Cockaded Woodpecker.

 

The Cleveland Campus is located on NC 1010 in the Cleveland School Community. The Cleveland facility houses a computer lab, the only stand-alone Esthetics program in the state, and classrooms used for curriculum and continuing education programs.

 

The Rudolph Howell & Son Environmental Learning Center, also known as Howell Woods, is located on Devil’s Racetrack Road near Bentonville Battleground. This educational and recreational center is over 2,800 acres of farmland, pristine hardwood and pine forest located on the Neuse River. Commonly referred to by locals as the “Neuse Low-Grounds,” this area represents practically all of the flora and fauna indigenous to Eastern North Carolina.

 

In November of 2001, the State of North Carolina passed a $3.1 billion bond referendum (the largest in the history of the United States) for the state's community colleges and universities.  Johnston Community College's share of $10.2 million is being used for new construction and renovations.

 

As a result of these funds, a new 28,000 square foot industrial technology building, the Britt Building, opened in the fall of 2004.  The Britt Building houses the Machining Technology and Air Conditioning, Heating and Refrigeration Technology programs, as well as other industrial programs.  Additions and/or renovations are also being made to all of the existing buildings on campus.  Thanks to the voters, Johnston Community College will have the space to offer the education and training needed in our service area over the decade ahead.

Wilson Technical Community College, located east of Zebulon in the City of Wilson, offers more than 20 programs in educational and technical career fields.  The college has an enrollment of more than 5,000 students and offers degree programs as well as continuing education and distance learning.
